Abstract

This project analyses the technical and economic feasibility of developing a European Rail Traffic Management System “ERTMS” specialised on low-traffic railway lines. It proposes a revised architecture that integrates Global Navigation Satellite System “GNSS” positioning technology within a dual-channel voting logic alongside with an Inertial Measurement Unit, with the aim of reducing costs whilst maintaining the functional and safety requirements of the system. Having picked Asunción – Guardo line as the case study, the project evaluates architectural modifications to both ERTMS levels. Some of the most relevant features that the project suggest are the replacement of the digital interlocking interface with an analogue equivalent, the decentralisation of the LEU architecture, and the outsourcing of the telecommunications infrastructure associated with ERTMS level 2. The economic results achieved showcase a CAPEX saving of 32.42% and 10.34% for ERTMS Levels 1 and 2 respectively, together with a projected 87% CAPEX reduction in the GSM telecommunication network.
