Abstract

.
This article reflects on the historical trajectory and po-tential of the concept of global health, at a time when other concepts are gaining relevance – namely ‘planetary health’ and ‘One Health’. The argument explores the co-lonial roots of global health, arguing that it evolved from a fundamental concern with the establishment of bor-ders and demarcations. At the same time, there are still unrealized possibilities in the concept of global health. The article suggests five meanings of global health – pla-netary, collective, public, peripheral and everyday – that can be seen as potential paths to realizing its emancipa-tory potential. With this reflection, I seek to contribute to the reconceptualization of global health in a context of planetary challenges.
