Logistics and port call optimization of Wind Powered Ships

Abstract

La industria marítima representa actualmente el 90% del comercio mundial en volumen y el 70% en valor, lo que también la hace responsable de aproximadamente el 2.5% de las emisiones globales de CO2. La Organización Marítima Internacional está empezando a imponer normativas que regulen las emisiones provenientes de esta industria, y el objetivo de este proyecto es analizar cómo la implementación de sistemas de propulsión eólicos (tecnologías WASP) y la optimización de las llegadas a puerto pueden contribuir a la descarbonización de la industria, así como los posibles ahorros de emisiones que se pueden obtener con ellas. En este proyecto se estudiarán tres tecnologías WASP: Rotores Flettner, DynaRigs y velas rígidas. Cada una de estas tecnologías se instalará en un tipo de barco diferente (petrolero, buque carguero y portacontenedores, respectivamente) y se analizará en una ruta diferente. Se desarrollará un modelo que, utilizando datos históricos reales sobre las condiciones del viento en cada una de las rutas, calculará la velocidad óptima de navegación para maximizar el ahorro de emisiones o el de costes, así como el porcentaje de la fuerza total que genera la tecnología WASP. Se analizará cómo estos resultados varían en función de la disponibilidad del puerto de destino y de las condiciones del viento. Por último, se realizará un estudio económico para evaluar la rentabilidad de estas tecnologías. Los resultados obtenidos en este proyecto muestran que las tecnologías WASP analizadas consiguen ahorros tanto en costes como en emisiones, y el porcentaje de utilización de estas tecnologías alcanza hasta valores en torno al 30% en dos de los tres casos presentados. Además, este proyecto también muestra que optimizar las llegadas a puerto siempre genera ahorros, con ahorros en costes que crecen hasta alrededor del 8% y ahorros en emisiones de hasta el 6%.The maritime industry currently accounts for 90% of global trade by volume and 70% by value, which also makes it responsible for approximately 2.5% of the world’s total CO2 emissions. The International Maritime Organization is consequently starting to impose regulations that will limit the emissions released from the industry, and this research project aims to analyze how the implementation of Wind Assisted Systems Propulsion (WASP) and port call optimization can support the decarbonization of the industry and the potential savings that can be achieved by optimizing these technologies. Three WASP technologies will be studied in this project: Flettner rotors, DynaRigs, and rigid sails. Each of these technologies will be installed in a different type of vessel (tanker, bulk carrier, and containership, respectively) and will be analyzed in a different route. A model that takes as input true historical data on the wind conditions in each of these routes will be executed, and it will compute the optimal sailing speed for which either the emissions savings or the costs savings are maximized, as well as the percentage of the total force that the WASP technology is providing. A validation analysis that studies how these results are affected by the availability of the port of destiny and by the wind conditions will be executed, and annualized savings and consumptions will be presented. Finally, an economic study to assess the profitability of these implementations will be discussed. Results obtained in this project show that the WASP technologies analyzed do indeed achieve savings in both costs and emissions, and the percentage of utilization of these technologies reaches up to values around 30% in two of the three cases presented. Moreover, this project also shows that implementing JIT with these technologies always leads to savings, with savings in costs growing up to around 8% and savings in emissions up to around 6%.
