Factores que nos pueden ayudar a predecir el precio del petróleo

Abstract

Nuestro propósito con este estudio es tratar de analizar qué índices y datos macroeconómicos se deben monitorizar estrechamente para intentar explicar y tratar de predecir el movimiento del precio del futuro del crudo ligero dulce (WTI Crude Oil que cotiza en NYMEX). Para ello, se lleva a cabo un estudio sobre los factores de la oferta y la demanda y cómo variaciones en estos factores han estado justificando las variaciones históricas del precio del barril de petróleo. Tras exponer el marco teórico acerca del funcionamiento del mercado del crudo, se analizará con distintos ejemplos si la creación o destrucción de empleo en EEUU impacta en el precio de los contratos de futuros del crudo o si es recomendable extender la atención a otro tipo de datos como la variación en el nivel de inventarios y la posición neta de futuros. Además, estudiaremos la posible correlación entre el precio del crudo y el Baltic Dry Index (BDI) y sus implicaciones de existir una correlación relevante.Our purpose with this study is to try to analyze which indices and macroeconomic indicators should be monitored closely to try to explain and predict the movement of the light sweet crude oil future contract price (WTI Crude Oil listed on NYMEX). For this purpose, a study is carried out focusing on the factors of supply and demand and how variations in these factors have been justifying the historical variations in the price of the oil barrel. After explaining the theoretical framework about how the crude oil market functions, we will analyze with several examples whether the creation or destruction of employment in the USA has an impact on the price of oil futures contracts or if it is advisable to focus on other types of data such as the variation in the level of inventories and the net position of futures. In addition, we will study the possible correlation between the price of crude oil and the Baltic Dry Index (BDI) and its implications given a relevant correlation.
