Abstract

This Bachelor’s Thesis focuses on the study of the structural steel design of an offshore wind turbine, with particular attention to situations in which it is subjected to extreme loads. The industry’s drive to find efficient and renewable energy sources has established offshore wind as a viable and competitive option. However, these structures in offshore environments face a number of challenges, such as manufacturing, transport, and installation constraints, together with marine corrosion, fatigue due to cyclic wind and wave loading, extreme sea states, and seabed scour around the foundation. This project defines these issues and explores potential solutions, while also providing a reusable and traceable basis that simplifies decision-making in similar locations, incorporating maintainability, sustainability, and structural performance considerations, and facilitating later implementation. To achieve this, the BLADED software will be used to run simulations based on data obtained from the literature, standards, and the project annexes. The simulations and results will then be processed using tools such as Excel or MATLAB to present the results clearly. In addition, 3D models will be developed to visualize the geometry and to check stresses and displacements. Finally, conclusions will be drawn, the main limitations will be discussed, and possible future lines of improvement will be proposed.
