CLIL Teacher’s Initial Education: A Study of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Student Teachers

Abstract

Este artículo analiza el nivel de adquisición de los principios del Aprendizaje Integrado de Contenido y Lengua (AICLE) por parte de futuros profesores de educación bilingüe en España. Se examinó a 56 maestros potenciales de AICLE de diferentes universidades españolas para determinar su programa académico, su interés en enseñar AICLE, su nivel de formación percibido en AICLE y su nivel de inglés. Se utilizó el Cuestionario de integración de los principios metodológicos AICLE (CIPMA) para evaluar el grado de integración de los principios del AICLE. Los resultados mostraron diferencias entre los grupos que habían cursado un máster en educación bilingüe y aquellos que habían cursado un grado en Educación Infantil o Primaria sin formación específica en AICLE, en dos de las cuatro dimensiones del cuestionario: fundamentos de AICLE y recursos y actividades específicos requeridos por este enfoque. Los estudiantes de posgrado obtuvieron mejores resultados en estas dimensiones. Además, se encontraron diferencias significativas entre los estudiantes que tenían dudas sobre ofrecer educación bilingüe y aquellos que estaban convencidos, así como entre los estudiantes que consideraban que estaban mal capacitados y aquellos que se percibían adecuadamente capacitados. En ambos casos, los últimos obtuvieron mejores resultados. Finalmente, se observó que los estudiantes con un mayor nivel de competencia lingüística mostraban una mayor integración de los principios del AICLE. Como conclusión, se destaca la necesidad de que las universidades aborden importantes desafíos en la formación de futuros maestros de AICLE, como impartir cursos de AICLE en todos los programas académicos de educación..This article examines the level of acquisition of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) principles by future bilingual education teachers in Spain. A sample of 56 potential CLIL teachers from different Spanish universities was analyzed to determine their academic program, interest in teaching CLIL, perceived level of CLIL training, and English proficiency level. The CLIL Methodological Principles Integration Questionnaire (CIPMA) was used to measure the degree of integration of CLIL principles. The results showed differences between groups who had completed a master's degree in bilingual education and those who had completed a degree in Early Childhood Education or Primary Education without specific CLIL training, in two out of the four dimensions of the questionnaire: CLIL foundations and the specific resources and activities required by this approach. Graduate students performed better in these dimensions. Additionally, significant differences were found between students who had doubts about offering bilingual education and those who were convinced, as well as between students who believed they were poorly trained and those who perceived themselves as adequately trained. In both cases, the latter group achieved better results. Finally, it was observed that students with higher language proficiency demonstrated greater integration of CLIL principles. In conclusion, universities need to address significant challenges in the training of future CLIL teachers, including the inclusion of CLIL courses in all education programs.
