This paper analyses the economic impact of tourism in the Balearic Islands over the period 2016–2024. The Balearic Islands are one of the most established tourist destinations in the European Mediterranean, with an economy dependent on international tourism, making them particularly vulnerable to external shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The study employs an input-output model built from the 2014 Balearic Input-Output Framework, with the aim of estimating the direct, indirect and induced effects of tourism expenditure on output, income and Gross Value Added of the Balearic economy. The tourism demand vector is derived from Spain's Tourism Satellite Account and the Tourist Expenditure Survey, deflated to constant 2014 prices using the Consumer Price Index to ensure consistency with the price structure of the input-output table. T he analysis is conducted under both the Type I model, which captures direct and indirect effects through inter-sectoral linkages, and the Type II model, which additionally incorporates induced effects on household consumption. The results allow for the identification of sectors with the highest multiplier capacity, the quantification of tourism's contribution to the regional economy for each year of the period under analysis, and the documentation of the economic collapse caused by the pandemic in 2020, as well as the subsequent recovery trajectory that culminated in the surpassing of previous pandemic levels in 2023 and their consolidation in 2024. The study concludes that tourism is the main driver of the Balearic economy, with a high multiplier effect that extends beyond the sectors directly linked to tourism, while also highlighting the region's significant exposure to external changes that may interrupt international tourism flows.en-GB
