La humildad como antídoto contra el mal uso del poder. Un diálogo entre la psicología humanista, la teología y la espiritualidad

Abstract

El poder está presente en toda relación interpersonal —se dé o no en el marco de una institución— y su uso indebido puede dañar tanto la relación como a las personas implicadas en ella. En este artículo analizamos este mal uso del poder desde la concepción de la persona que tienen, por un lado, la psicología humanista y, por otro, la teología cristiana. Desde este marco, proponemos la humildad como un antídoto imprescindible contra el abuso de poder. Para sostener esta propuesta, elaboramos una definición de “humildad” basada en la Biblia y la tradición teológica y espiritual cristiana, y la ponemos en diálogo con la psicología en torno a las relaciones sanas que posibilita. Concluimos con un análisis crítico de ciertas concepciones de la kénosis, que, a nuestro juicio, pueden derivar en dinámicas abusivas si no se comprenden a la luz de la humildad.

Power is present in all interpersonal relationships—whether they occur within the framework of an institution or not—and its misuse can damage both the relationship and the people involved in it. In this article, we analyse this misuse of power from the perspective of humanistic psychology on the one hand and Christian theology on the other. From this framework, we propose humility as an essential antidote to the abuse of power. To support this proposal, we develop a definition of “humility” based on the Bible and Christian theological and spiritual tradition, and we bring it into dialogue with psychology around the healthy relationships it enables. We conclude with a critical analysis of certain conceptions of kenosis, which, in our view, can lead to abusive dynamics if not understood in the light of humility.
