Abstract

El capítulo analiza el papel de las imágenes en la oración ignaciana a principios del siglo XVII, centrándose en su función pedagógica y espiritual dentro del contexto de la Compañía de Jesús. A partir del estudio de libros ilustrados de oración y de los Ejercicios espirituales, el autor examina cómo las imágenes narrativas, simbólicas y didácticas ayudaban a estructurar la meditación, activar la imaginación y guiar el discernimiento espiritual. El texto muestra cómo estas imágenes no eran simples adornos, sino instrumentos cuidadosamente diseñados para facilitar la contemplación, la memoria y la interiorización del mensaje cristiano. Asimismo, se aborda la relación entre texto e imagen, destacando la progresiva sistematización visual de la práctica ignaciana y su difusión en distintos contextos europeos. El capítulo sitúa estas estrategias visuales dentro de la cultura religiosa de la época y subraya su importancia en la formación espiritual y educativa.

This chapter examines the role of images in Ignatian prayer at the beginning of the seventeenth century, focusing on their pedagogical and spiritual function within the context of the Society of Jesus. Through the study of illustrated prayer books and editions of the Spiritual Exercises, the author analyzes how narrative, symbolic, and didactic images were used to structure meditation, stimulate imagination, and guide spiritual discernment. The text shows that images were not merely decorative elements but carefully designed tools intended to support contemplation, memory, and the internalization of Christian teachings. It also explores the interaction between text and image, highlighting the gradual visual systematization of Ignatian practice and its wide dissemination across Europe. The chapter places these visual strategies within the broader religious culture of the period and emphasizes their relevance for spiritual formation and education.
