Introspección y performatividad en el discurso místico Teresa de Jesús

Abstract

El capítulo analiza cómo el discurso místico de Teresa de Jesús construye su autoridad a través de dos mecanismos complementarios: la introspección autobiográfica (el “yo” que se mira y se narra) y la performatividad del lenguaje (la palabra que actúa, transforma y produce efectos en quien escribe y en quien lee).

En la primera parte, Marcos sitúa la escritura teresiana en la tradición de la autobiografía espiritual, pero subraya su singularidad: Teresa no “cuenta” solo una vida interior, sino que organiza un yo polifónico que alterna registros y posiciones (confesional, pedagógica, exhortativa) según el interlocutor y el objetivo del texto. Esa introspección se articula mediante estrategias retóricas de autoría: por un lado, fórmulas que legitiman la voz (obediencia, mandato, experiencia); por otro, las fórmulas de humildad como recurso estratégico que desactiva sospechas y gana credibilidad en un contexto donde la voz femenina estaba especialmente vigilada.

En la segunda parte, el autor desarrolla la idea de la performatividad: en Teresa, el lenguaje no es solo expresión, sino acción espiritual. La escritura funciona como práctica que “hace” algo (mueve, convence, consuela, corrige, anima), y el propio texto se presenta como espacio donde se produce una transformación: del sujeto que escribe y del lector que se ve implicado en esa experiencia. The chapter examines how Teresa of Jesus builds authority in her mystical discourse through two complementary mechanisms: autobiographical introspection (a self that observes and narrates itself) and linguistic performativity (words that do things—producing effects and transformations in both writer and reader).

In the first part, Marcos places Teresa’s writing within the tradition of spiritual autobiography, while stressing what makes it distinctive: Teresa does not merely recount an inner life; she shapes a polyphonic “I” that shifts between different roles and registers (confessional, pedagogical, exhortative) depending on the addressee and the aim of the text. This introspection is supported by authorial strategies: on the one hand, formulas that legitimize her voice (obedience, command, lived experience); on the other, rhetorical humility as a strategic device that reduces suspicion and increases credibility in a context of heightened scrutiny of women’s voices.

Overall, the chapter concludes that Teresian mysticism combines introspection and performativity to produce an effective textual authority: a voice grounded in experience, protected by rhetorical humility, and pragmatically active in shaping spiritual and communicative reality.
