Abstract

El artículo analiza la evolución política y social de Irlanda del Norte tras los veinticinco años transcurridos desde la firma del Acuerdo de Viernes Santo en 1998, que puso fin a décadas de conflicto entre comunidades protestantes unionistas y católicas nacionalistas. Se revisan los avances logrados en materia de estabilidad política, así como las dificultades persistentes, como la falta de confianza entre líderes políticos, la memoria dividida del conflicto y la limitada integración entre comunidades. Asimismo, se examinan los efectos recientes del Brexit en la dinámica política regional y en el funcionamiento del gobierno compartido. El autor también reflexiona sobre posibles escenarios futuros, incluyendo el impacto del cambio demográfico y el debate sobre una eventual reunificación de Irlanda. El texto concluye planteando interrogantes sobre la sostenibilidad del modelo institucional establecido por el acuerdo de paz.

The article examines the political and social evolution of Northern Ireland twenty-five years after the signing of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, which ended decades of conflict between Protestant unionist and Catholic nationalist communities. It reviews the achievements in terms of political stability while highlighting persistent challenges such as the lack of trust among political leaders, the divided memory of the conflict, and the limited integration between communities. The article also analyzes the recent impact of Brexit on the region’s political dynamics and on the functioning of the power-sharing government. Furthermore, the author explores possible future scenarios, including the effects of demographic change and the debate surrounding a potential Irish reunification. The text concludes by raising questions about the long-term sustainability of the institutional framework established by the peace agreement.
