Configurational Theorizing and Multiple Theories in the Pursuit of Theoretical Advancement: A Systematic Review

Abstract

El estudio analiza la creciente adopción de enfoques configuracionales para abordar la complejidad de los fenómenos sociales. Su objetivo es examinar el uso de múltiples teorías en el desarrollo teórico y su integración en la formulación de proposiciones. Mediante una revisión sistemática de la literatura entre 2020 y 2025, se identifican trabajos que destacan la eficacia de la multiplicidad teórica como una perspectiva holística. Asimismo, se subraya el papel del análisis comparativo cualitativo (QCA) como método predominante en estos estudios. Los resultados evidencian que la combinación de diferentes marcos teóricos permite comprender mejor fenómenos complejos, aunque el análisis se limita a publicaciones indexadas en Scopus.

The study examines the growing adoption of configurational approaches to address the complexity of social phenomena. Its objective is to analyze the use of multiple theories in theory development and their integration into propositions. Through a systematic literature review covering the period from 2020 to 2025, the study identifies works that emphasize the effectiveness of theoretical multiplicity as a holistic perspective. It also highlights the role of qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) as a predominant analytical method in such studies. The findings show that combining different theoretical frameworks enhances the understanding of complex phenomena, although the review is limited to Scopus-indexed publications.
