Capelles i retaules a l’arquitectura civil de Mallorca. La pietat domèstica al segle XVI

Abstract

El estudio analiza el desarrollo de capillas y la presencia de retablos en viviendas de las élites mallorquinas durante el siglo XVI, vinculados tanto a la devoción privada como a la representación social. A partir del análisis de 190 inventarios post mortem y de ejemplos conservados, se examina la función, tipología e iconografía de estos elementos en el ámbito doméstico. Se observa la coexistencia de retablos góticos heredados con nuevas influencias renacentistas, procedentes principalmente de Valencia, Flandes e Italia. El trabajo destaca la importancia de la devotio moderna en la difusión de la piedad doméstica y la progresiva institucionalización de capillas privadas. Asimismo, se evidencia que estos objetos cumplían funciones devocionales y simbólicas, reflejando el estatus social de sus propietarios.

The study examines the development of chapels and the presence of altarpieces in the homes of the privileged classes of Mallorca during the 16th century, linked to both private devotion and social representation. Based on the analysis of 190 post-mortem inventories and surviving examples, it explores the function, typology, and iconography of these elements in domestic contexts. The research highlights the coexistence of inherited Gothic altarpieces with emerging Renaissance influences from Valencia, Flanders, and Italy. It also emphasizes the role of devotio moderna in promoting domestic piety and the gradual institutionalization of private chapels. These objects fulfilled both devotional and symbolic functions, reflecting the social status of their owners.
