Arte religioso británico: la creación del escultor David Mach

Abstract

Las relaciones entre arte y religión continúan desarrollándose a la luz de las nuevas tendencias estéticas. Incluso el arte más rompedor sigue procesando creativamente la materia prima de la trascendencia, la religión y, específicamente, el cristianismo. Uno de los movimientos recientes donde es más interesante estudiarlo es el Arte Joven Británico, conocida como BritArt. David Mach es un escultor que anticipó el BritArt y que ha desarrollado numerosas obras religiosas de primera magnitud. Aporta un arte religioso apocalíptico, que fuerza a que, a través de la ira, la violencia, la furia y la profusión desbordante, la naturaleza humana confiese su esencia. Lo religioso en el arte de Mach busca la autenticidad mediante la poética de los deshechos y el reciclaje de los materiales físicos y simbólicos. Es un arte populista, que busca logros espectaculares y practica el Shock-art o arte chocante que consigue atención y produce extrañamientos del sentido común. Mach pone en marcha búsquedas radicales forzando la realidad visual como es el caso de sus crucifixiones. No obstante, el arte de Mach y el BritArt- siempre se protege tras la ironía. Funciona como arte lúdico, sarcástico e irreverente y parece que necesita esas actitudes estéticas para poder relacionarse libremente con la religión.

The relationship between art and religion is one of constant evolution in the light of new esthetic trends. Indeed, even the most groundbreaking art continues to process the raw materials provided by transcendence, religion and, specifically, Christianity. One of the recent movements in which this process may be found is the work of Young British Artists, also known as BritArt. In this respect, David Mach is a sculptor who anticipated BritArt and who has produced numerous significant works of religious art. His is an apocalyptic form of art that compels human nature to come to terms with its essence through anger, violence, fury and overwhelming profusion. In its religious sense, Mach s art seeks authenticity through a poetics of waste and the recycling of physical and symbolic materials. It is also a populist art that strives to attain spectacular achievements and employs. Shock-Art, which attracts attention and opposes common sense. As in his crucifixions, Mach frequently undertakes radical searches in which he forces visual reality. In any case, Mach s art - and the BritArt at large- finds protection in irony, for it would appear that, in order to relate freely with religion, it needs to remain a playful, sarcastic and irreverent form of art.
