Drivers and barriers of environmental, social and governance information in investment decision-making: the Spanish case

Abstract

La investigación en inversión socialmente responsable así como la consideración de los aspectos ambientales, sociales y de gobierno ha experimentado un crecimiento sustancial en los últimos años alrededor del mundo y de manera especial en Europa. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar las ayudas y barreras que la integración de información en aspectos ambientales, sociales y de gobierno tiene en los mercados financieros y por qué España no ha seguido el mismo ritmo que otros países que han sido líderes en inversión socialmente responsable. Con este objetivo, se han entrevistado a inversores españoles, gestores de activos, analistas y compañías invertidas para analizar la integración de los aspectos ambientales, sociales y de gobierno y determinar los apoyos y barreras que la integración de estos aspectos tienen en la inversión.

Socially responsible investment (SRI) and the consideration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues when investing has experienced tremendous growth in recent years around the world and especially in Europe. The aim of this paper is to analyse the drivers and barriers to the integration of ESG information in the financial market and why Spain has not kept pace with countries that have traditionally been leaders in SRI. For this purpose, we interviewed Spanish investors, asset managers, analysts and invested companies (in particular investor relations departments) to analyze their perceptions of ESG integration and determine the specific drivers and barriers to ESG integration in investment.
