An important drop in the PA levels during adolescence has been observed in recent years. PE is a context in which both children and adolescents maintain a daily contact with PA. It explains the growing interest of researchers in this context. The main aim of this study was testing the predictive role of motivational (motivational orientation, intrinsic motivation and dispositional flow), attitudinal (taste for PE) and behavioural (current levels of PA) on adolescents' intentions to be physically active in the future according to the educational stage (compulsory/non-compulsory). Five hundred and eighty seven physical education students ranging from ages 14 to 20 (M=15.13, SD=1.07) participated in the study. The instruments in this investigation were TEOSQ, the intrinsic motivation factor of the PLOC, DFS-2, G-LTEQ and IPAS. Regression analyses show that dispositional flow, taste for PE and intrinsic motivation emerge as predictors of the intention to be physically active among students of the compulsory educational stage (37% variance explained) while dispositional flow, current levels of PA and taste for PE explain the 47% of variance among students belonging to the non-compulsory educational stage. These findings suggest slight differences between students of both stages. Results are discussed in the self-determination and flow theories framework |
