El rol del intérprete en el ámbito sanitario. Estudio de caso: Cirugía en Turkana

Abstract

La búsqueda de una definición para el rol del intérprete ha sido una cuestión que lleva suscitando interés entre los investigadores desde hace décadas. Por eso, numerosos académicos han abordado el rol del intérprete desde distintas perspectivas, tanto desde el punto de vista teórico como práctico (si bien es cierto que la literatura bajo este último enfoque es más reducida y arbitraria). Algunos académicos, como Roberts (1997), Wadensjö (1998), Bolden (2000) o Diriker (2004), entre otros, han hecho uso del lenguaje metafórico para definir el rol del intérprete. En cambio, otros como Beltran Avery (2001) Brisset et al. (2013), Pöchhacker (2015) o Aguirre Fernández-Bravo y Roca Urgorri (2015) han optado por definirlo a partir de realidades opuestas. Ante la dificultad de definir dicho rol, este trabajo parte de la propuesta desarrollada por Aguirre Fernández-Bravo y Roca Urgorri (2015) para investigar sobre el rol del intérprete sanitario a través de un estudio de caso: Cirugía en Turkana. Se ha podido realizar un estudio a partir de una muestra de médicos que han participado en el proyecto para conocer su percepción acerca del rol del intérprete ante distintas situaciones interpretativas planteadas en una encuesta creada para este fin. Los resultados de la investigación sugieren que, a los ojos de los médicos participantes del proyecto, el intérprete sanitario se percibe como un mediador intercultural. Gracias a la recopilación de datos, este trabajo pretende crear nuevas líneas de investigación, en un intento de dotar a la interpretación sanitaria de mayor relevancia dentro de la disciplina de Interpretación.

Since the past decades, researchers have attempted to find a definition for the interpreter’s role. For this reason, many of them have come up with different approaches to address this issue, both from a theoretical and a practical point of view (with the latter being more reduced and arbitrary). As such, academics like Roberts (1997), Wadensjö (1998), Bolden (2000) or Diriker (2004), among others, have used metaphors to describe the interpreter’s role. In contrast, others like Beltran Avery (2001), Brisset et al. (2013), Pöchhacker (2015) or Aguirre Fernández-Bravo and Roca Urgorri (2015) have defined it from two opposing realities. Given the difficulty of finding a definition for this role, this dissertation uses as basis for its investigation Aguirre Fernández-Bravo and Roca Urgorri’s (2015) proposal in order to research the interpreter’s role through a case study: Cirugía en Turkana. A study has been elaborated using a sample of doctors that participated in the project, in order to learn about their perception with regards to the interpreter’s role in the various interpretative situations presented in a multiple-choice survey, elaborated for the purpose of this investigation. The results of this investigation suggest that, from the doctors that participated in the project’s point of view, the interpreter is perceived as an intercultural mediator. Thanks to the compilation of data, this dissertation aims to provide new lines of investigation, in an attempt to make healthcare interpreting more relevant within the discipline of Interpreting.
