Análisis de la traducción del cómic : "Blacksad : Arctic Nation"

Abstract

En este trabajo se aborda un análisis de las traducciones de Arctic Nation, el segundo tomo de la serie de cómics de Blacksad de Juan Díaz Canales y Juanjo Guarnido, en particular las traducciones al francés y al inglés. Determinamos que aunque Blacksad es un cómic francés, el guion en realidad se escribió en español, la lengua materna del guionista y del dibujante. Notamos que el cómic al estar ambientado en Estados Unidos, emplea muchísimo el inglés a lo largo de la obra, esto también afecta al dibujo, ya que incluso las onomatopeyas son las que uno encontraría en un cómic estadounidense y no en uno europeo. Los autores dan por sentado que sus lectores europeos sabrán suficiente inglés para entender el texto, y esto también se ve en la traducción al francés que mantiene todo el uso del inglés. La traducción al inglés es un caso interesante ya que se está traduciendo un cómic al lenguaje de la cultura en la está ambientada la obra. Resulta en particular interesante como las traducciones afrontan los temas del racismo, y como la traducción al inglés decide mantener la forma de hablar de los personajes del guion original en vez de adaptarla a como hablaría un estadounidense dependiendo de su entorno social. Las traducciones están bien hechas, y cumplen con el objetivo de transmitir las intenciones del autor original a un nuevo público.

This paper analyzes the translations of Arctic Nation, the second volume of the Blacksad comic series by Juan Díaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido, in particular the translations into French and English. We determined that even though Blacksad is a French comic, the script was actually written in Spanish, the mother tongue of the writer and artist duo. We noted that since the comic was set in the United States, it uses English a lot throughout the story, this even affects the artwork, since the sound effects are those found in American comics rather than European ones. The authors seem to assume that their European readers will know enough English to understand the text, and this can be seen in the French translation, which maintains the use of English. The translation into English is an interesting case since it’s a translation into the language of the culture in which the story is set. It is particularly interesting how the translations deal with issues of racism, and how the English translation decided to mostly maintain the way the characters spoke in the original script, rather than adapting them to how an American would speak depending on their social group. The translations are well done, and fulfill the objective of transmitting the intentions of the original author to a new public.
