La recepción de las leyendas de Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer en lengua inglesa: Análisis comparativo de la retraducción de "La Cruz del Diablo".

Abstract

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (1836-1870) es uno de los principales líricos españoles cuya obra ha sido alabada y estudiada por numerosos pensadores y escritores. No obstante, a pesar de este reconocimiento en España, no sucede así en otros países, como EE. UU. Por ello, resulta necesario llevar a cabo esta investigación para conocer el porqué. Este Trabajo de Fin de Grado busca analizar en profundidad los posibles motivos de las retraducciones de una de las leyendas de Bécquer, publicadas en obras y años diferentes, cuyo título es "La cruz del diablo". Las obras elegidas han sido: "Legends and Letters" (1995), "Rhymes and Legends (selection)" (2006) y "Romantic Legends of Spain" (1909). El objetivo es poner a prueba los criterios establecidos en el artículo escrito por Susanne M. Cadera, dentro de la obra "Literary Retranslation in Context", titulado «Literary Retranslation in Context: A Historical, Social and Cultural Perspective», que se oponen a la Hipótesis de la Retraducción propuesta por Berman (1990: 1-7) y Bensimon (1990: IX). Para ello, se ha realizado un estudio comparativo de las retraducciones de la leyenda mencionada, en términos tanto lingüísticos como culturales.

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (1836-1870) is one of the greatest Spanish lyric poets whose works have been praised and studied by several thinkers and writers. Nevertheless, despite this recognition in Spain, it does not occur this way in other countries, like USA, thus, we observe the need of implementing this study in order to learn why. This Trabajo de Fin de Grado aims at analysing in detail the possible reasons of the retranslations of one of Bécquer’s legends, published in different works and years, entitled "La cruz del diablo" (The Devil’s Cross). The works chosen are: "Legends and Letters" (1995), "Rhymes and Legends (selection)" (2006) and "Romantic Legends of Spain" (1909). We search to test the standards established in the article written by Susanne M. Cadera, included in "Literary Retranslation in Context", whose title is «Literary Retranslation in Context: A Historical, Social and Cultural Perspective», which are contrary to the Retranslation Hypothesis proposed by Berman (1990: 1-7) and Bensimon (1990: IX). For that purpose, we have produced a comparative study of the retranslations of the mentioned legend, in terms of linguistics and culture.
