Imaginación figurativa, abstraída y discernida. Una aproximación al oculus imaginationis de los Ejercicios Espirituales de san Ignacio

Abstract

La imaginación es una característica que recorre los Ejercicios Espirituales de san Ignacio de Loyola mediante sus variedades textuales («ver», «la vista imaginativa», «imaginando» o «los ojos de la imaginación»). Lo que el texto aporta (mistografía), le precede una experiencia (mística) que articula un proceso (mistología) teológico-espiritual de la fe cristiana. La misma experiencia de san Ignacio demuestra cómo el ojo, mediante una serie de imágenes devocionales o materiales, mentales y repre- sentaciones y/o visiones, se dirige al sí mismo (self), a los misterios de la fe cristiana (teologal) y a Cristo (crístico). La progresiva apertura del ojo y el aprendizaje en el discernimiento espiritual atestiguan la importancia del ojo de la imaginación como ejercicio teológico-espiritual en donde se resalta lo imaginal (a diferencia de lo ima- ginario). Así, el proceso de los Ejercicios Espirituales se vertebra en una imaginación figurativa, abstraída y discernida, lo que supone rescatar la actividad imaginativa del ámbito de la psicología y considerarla en su estatus teológico-espiritual (teopoética de la vista imaginativa) a partir de sus tres componentes u operaciones espirituales: revestirse (la hermenéutica), ver y conocer (el conocimiento interno) y crear (las marcas cristológicas).

Imagination is a characteristic feature that runs through the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, through its textual variants («seeing», «imaginative look», «imagining», or «the eyes of imagination»). What the text contributes (mistografía) is preceded by an experience (mystical) that articulates a theological-spiritual process (mistología) of Christian faith. The very experience of St. Ignatius demonstrates how the eye, through a series of images devotional or material, mental as well as representations and/or visions, is directed to the self, to the mysteries of Christian faith (theological), and to Christ (Christic). The gradual opening of the eye and the learning in spiritual discernment vouch for the importance of the eye of imagination as a theological-spiritual exercise where the imaginal (as opposed to the imaginary) stands out. Thus, the process of the Spiritual Exercise upholds an imagination that is figurative, abstracted and discerned, which presupposes rescuing the imaginative activity from the ambit of Psychology and considering it in its theological-spiritual status (theo-poetics of the imaginative view) starting from its three components or spiritual operations: recasting (Hermeneutics), seeing and knowing (interior knowledge) and creating (Christological traits).
