La importancia de la retraducción: Análisis de las traducciones de Persuasión a lo largo de un siglo

Abstract

El presente Trabajo Fin de Grado tiene como objetivo estudiar la obra Persuasión de Jane Austen, centrándonos para ello en el fenómeno de la retraducción de las obras literarias. En primer lugar, comprobaremos cuál ha sido la recepción de la obra en España y analizaremos cuántas traducciones al español se han publicado hasta el momento y si la obra se sigue editando en la actualidad. A continuación, realizaremos un estudio diacrónico en un lapso de tiempo de un siglo de las diversas traducciones de la obra para poder comparar y contrastar tanto la labor de las editoriales como la de los traductores en dicha praxis. Así pues, cotejaremos un total de diez traducciones y prestaremos atención a las principales dificultades de traducción con las que se han encontrado los distintos traductores: nombres propios, tratamientos y títulos honoríficos, topónimos y culturemas. En definitiva, esta investigación con una doble línea de estudio, desde una perspectiva editorial y desde el punto de vista de los traductores, pretende responder a la pregunta que muchos lingüistas y estudiosos de la lengua y de la traducción se han planteado a lo largo de la historia: ¿la práctica de la retraducción es realmente necesaria en el mundo editorial o una primera traducción puede ser tan válida y admisible como las siguientes? Por último, en este trabajo concluiremos con la idea de que la retraducción puede darse por distintas cuestiones, pero la más importante es la de adaptarse a las convenciones del momento y al destinatario al que va dirigido la traducción.

This end-of-degree dissertation aims to examine the retranslation of literary works using as a case study the novel Persuasion by Jane Austen. First, we will analyse how the work was received in Spain and we will determine how many Spanish translations have been published to date and whether new translations of Persuasion are being produced today. Thus, we will carry out a diachronic analysis of several translations of the novel from the last century in order to compare and contrast both the task of publishers and that of translators in such praxis. We will then compare a total of ten translations focusing on the main translation difficulties encountered by the various translators: names, titles, places and culturemes. Ultimately, this research project, conducted from two different perspectives—that of the publisher and that of the translator—seeks to answer the question that many linguists and language and translation scholars have posed throughout history: is the practice of retranslation really necessary in the world of publishing or can a first translation be as valid and admissible as the next? This dissertation concludes that retranslation is done for a number of reasons, the most important being the adaptation to the conventions of the time and the intended audience.
