Interpreters and fixers in conflict zones: Iraq and Afghanistan

Abstract

Los intérpretes en zonas de conflicto se alejan de ser un fenómeno nuevo. Los relatos históricos y varios autores no han mostrado mucho interés por este tipo de intérpretes, pero hay informes más recientes que proporcionan información previamente desatendida sobre ellos. Aunque por lo general siguen siendo invisibles para muchos relatos históricos, y no se ha escrito mucho sobre ellos, su importancia histórica es indiscutible. Independientemente de que se refieran a ellos como intérpretes, fixers, lingüistas, o con cualquier otro término, se les describe a partir de cierta terminología que proporciona su definición y sus funciones. En este proyecto de investigación analizamos las definiciones de los términos intérprete y fixer, así como una amplia gama de temas que giran en torno a ellos. Comparamos lo que diferentes autores y fuentes, primarias y secundarias, académicas y no académicas, han dicho sobre los intérpretes y los fixers y sobre los diferentes temas que se relacionan con ellos. Hay una serie de temas que giran en torno a los intérpretes y fixers en zonas de conflicto: su función a lo largo de la historia, los peligros a los que se enfrentan, sus motivaciones para aceptar este tipo de trabajo, su supuesta posición de neutralidad, el aspecto ético/moral de su profesión, la identidad y las narrativas que se asocian a ellos, los programas de formación para mejorar sus condiciones de trabajo, y su presencia en los escenarios de la guerra moderna de Afganistán e Irak. Nuestro objetivo en este proyecto de investigación es analizar y comparar lo que los diferentes autores han dicho sobre dicho asunto, con el fin de sacar nuestras propias conclusiones y tratar de identificar algunos patrones.

Interpreters in zones of conflict are far from being a new phenomenon. Historical accounts and various authors haven’t shown much interest for this type of interpreters, but there are newer reports that provide previously unattended information about them. Although they generally remain invisible to many historical accounts, and not much has been written about them, their historical importance is undeniable. Whether referred to as interpreters, fixers, linguists or otherwise, they are described by a certain terminology that provides their definition and their functions. In this research project, we analyze the definitions of the terms interpreter and fixer, as well as a wide range of subjects that revolve around them. We compare what different primary and secondary, academic and non-academic, sources and authors have said about interpreters and fixers and the different subjects that relate to them. There are a range of subjects revolving around interpreters and fixers in conflict zones: their role across history, the dangers they face, their motivations to accept such a job, their alleged role of neutrality, the ethical/moral aspect of their profession, the narratives and identity that are associated to them, training programs to improve their working conditions, and their presence in the modern warfare scenarios of Afghanistan and Iraq. Our goal in this research project is to analyze and compare what the different authors have said on this subject, in order to draw our own conclusions and attempt to identify some patterns.
