Los servicios de interpretación en la acogida de inmigrantes: el papel de la Iglesia en la acogida

Abstract

«La lengua es uno de los elementos distintivos de una cultura, y (…) uno de los instrumentos de expresión de esta cultura» (Rodrigo Alsina, 1999). En nuestro mundo globalizado, cada vez se crean mayores lazos entre distintas culturas, pero el idioma sigue siendo un impedimento para comunicarnos. Por ello, son necesarios los intérpretes, ya que no se limitan a traducir palabras, sino que son mediadores culturales (Taft, 1981). La labor del intérprete es de vital importancia en los servicios sociales, especialmente en los centros de acogida de inmigrantes. El intérprete actúa de puente entre «el yo» y «el otro» (Thomas et al., 2005), para favorecer la comunicación entre el país de acogida y el inmigrante que llega. Ante la llegada masiva de inmigrantes a España (64 298 entradas irregulares en 2018), los centros de acogida estatales y no estatales, especialmente los organismos de la Iglesia Católica, focalizan sus esfuerzos en el cumplimiento de la regulación nacional e internacional en materia de asilo y acogida, sin embargo, el derecho a una interpretación competente y de calidad pasa a un segundo plano. A fin de comprender la realidad española en materia de servicios de interpretación en la acogida de inmigrantes, este trabajo examina si los inmigrantes reciben asistencia lingüística, quién se la proporciona, si los intérpretes en los centros de acogida son profesionales, y qué efectos puede tener sobre los inmigrantes la ausencia de estos servicios. A su vez, a través de un estudio a inmigrantes y trabajadores de centros de acogida (concretamente centros de la Iglesia), se analiza cuál es el rol del intérprete más adecuado en estos casos, cuál es la opinión de los usuarios sobre los intérpretes y su mediación, y se resalta la importancia que tiene contar con un servicio de interpretación competente en la acogida de inmigrantes.

In our globalized world, more and more links are being created between different cultures, but the language is still an impediment to communication. For this reason, interpreters are necessary, since they do not limit themselves to translating words, but are cultural mediators (Taft, 1981). The work of the interpreter is of vital importance in social services, especially in immigrant reception centers. The interpreter acts as a bridge between "I" and "the other" (Thomas et al., 2005), to promote communication between the host country and the arriving immigrant. With the massive influx of immigrants into Spain (64,298 irregular entries in 2018), state and non-state reception centers, especially organizations of the Catholic Church, focus their efforts on complying with national and international regulations on asylum and reception, but the right to a competent interpretation goes unnoticed. To understand the Spanish situation regarding interpreting services in the reception of immigrants, this paper examines whether immigrants receive language assistance, who provides it, whether the interpreters in the reception centers are professionals, and what effects the absence of these services can have on immigrants. At the same time, through a study done to immigrants and workers in reception centers (specifically Church centers), we analyze which is the most suitable role for an interpreter in these cases, as well as the opinion of the users on the interpreters and their mediation, and we highlight the importance of having a competent interpreting service in the reception of immigrants.
