Operación «Esperanza del Mediterráneo» : la interpretación al servicio de los migrantes y refugiados a bordo del Aquarius

Abstract

La interpretación en los servicios públicos, también conocida como interpretación comunitaria, constituye uno de los ámbitos de la interpretación más infravalorados y menos reconocidos de esta disciplina. A pesar de ello, resulta una profesión cada vez más relevante e imprescindible debido a los constantes movimientos migratorios que está protagonizando la sociedad en la actualidad. En efecto, el presente trabajo estudia el caso concreto del servicio de interpretación prestado durante la operación «Esperanza del Mediterráneo»; dispositivo que se llevó a cabo para ofrecer ayuda a los refugiados y migrantes que iban a bordo del Aquarius. El objetivo del mismo consiste en determinar si la gestión y la organización del servicio de interpretación fueron adecuadas teniendo en cuenta los criterios aplicables a la profesión del intérprete y si se caracterizó por la ausencia del reconocimiento profesional de los intérpretes. Para ello, debido al reciente suceso de este acontecimiento concreto, se han compaginado el estudio cuantitativo y el estudio cualitativo a fin de obtener mayor información y poder delimitar así el trabajo. En primer lugar, el método cualitativo se ha visto respaldado por entrevistas a diferentes personas y entidades que se vieron involucradas de alguna manera en el servicio que atañe al presente trabajo. Por su parte, el método cuantitativo se ha caracterizado por la realización de un cuestionario difundido entre diferentes personas que actuaron como intérpretes (intérpretes ad hoc o intérpretes profesionales) o que tuvieron una fuerte implicación en el servicio de interpretación. Por último, se ha expuesto una breve propuesta a modo de crítica constructiva para mejorar el proceso de preparación y la prestación del servicio de interpretación en situaciones similares.

Social service interpreting, also known as community interpreting, is one of the most undervalued and least recognised areas of interpreting. Nevertheless, it constitutes a profession which is becoming nowadays more important and necessary, due to sustained migratory movements. In fact, this project examines the specific case of the interpreting service provided during the operation called “Esperanza del Mediterráneo”. This procedure was carried out to offer assistance to the refugees and migrants who were on board the rescue ship Aquarius. This investigation aims to determine whether the management and organisation of the interpreting service were appropriate according to the criteria applicable to the interpreting profession. In addition, it has as a goal to clarify whether there was a lack of professional recognition towards the interpreters. To this end, the quantitative research and qualitative research have been combined in order to get more information and to delimit the investigation. Firstly, the qualitative method has been guaranteed by interviews with different people and institutions that were involved in the service examined in this project. Meanwhile, the quantitative method was characterised by the design of a survey sent to different people who acted as interpreters (ad hoc interpreters and professional interpreters) or with a strong involvement in the interpreting service. Finally, a brief proposal has been put forward as a constructive criticism to improve the preparation and the provision of interpreting services in similar situations.
