El intérprete en ficción: El rol del intérprete de la película Amistad

Abstract

El rol desempeñado por los intérpretes es una cuestión que está siempre abierta para debate y para examen, ya que el intérprete puede variar de estrategia en relación con cada situación. En el ámbito judicial, “la interpretación constituye una operación jurídica imprescindible para la aplicación del Derecho a una situación fáctica […][especialmente] en la naturaleza perentoria de la actividad interpretativa con vistas a la posterior aplicación de la norma interpretada” (Ribes Ribes, 2003, p. 21). La realización de este trabajo tiene por finalidad analizar el rol del intérprete en ficción, en concreto el de la película Amistad de Steven Spielberg, y evaluar, en base a sus actos, si se trata de un intérprete canal o un intérprete defensor y cómo ello influye para examinar el componente ético de esta profesión. Además se pretende establecer si este intérprete actúa como mediador intercultural. Para ello, se ha llevado a cabo una investigación bibliográfica y un posterior análisis basándose principalmente en la teoría de Aguirre Fernández-Bravo (2019) sobre el grado de mediación en la interpretación en los servicios públicos así como en la teoría sobre la mediación intercultural y los distintos modelos que existen de la misma. El primer objetivo es, una vez expuesta la teoría, analizar el papel del intérprete en base a los parámetros de mediación y establecer el rol que desempeña. Además, otro objetivo es establecer si el intérprete de Amistad es mediador intercultural y si su papel encaja con algunos de los modelos existentes.

The role played by interpreters is always open to discussion and examination, as the interpreter may vary in strategy in relation to each situation. In the judicial sphere, "interpretation is an essential legal operation for the application of the law to a factual situation [...] [especially] in the peremptory nature of interpreting activity with a view to the subsequent application of the interpreted norm" (Ribes Ribes, 2003, p. 21). The purpose of this paper is to analyse the role of the fictional interpreter, specifically that of Steven Spielberg's film Amistad, and to assess, on the basis of his acts, whether he is a conduit interpreter or an advocate interpreter and how this influences the examination of the ethical component of this profession. In addition, it is intended to establish whether this interpreter acts as an intercultural mediator. To this end, a bibliographical investigation and subsequent analysis has been carried out based mainly on the theory of Aguirre Fernández-Bravo (2019) on the degree of mediation in interpretation in public services as well as on the theory of intercultural mediation and the different models that exist on this matter. The first objective is, once the theory has been presented, to analyse the role of the interpreter based on the parameters of mediation and to establish the role he plays. In addition, another objective is to establish if the interpreter of Amistad is an intercultural mediator and if his role fits with any of the existing models.
