Chapter 14: Testing Transport Mode Cooperation and Competition Within a Country: A Spatial Econometrics Approach

Abstract

El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar la complejidad de la cooperación modal y competencia, modelando los flujos interprovinciales dentro de un país y en presencia de infraestructuras logísticas, almacenes y actividades mayoristas, así como hubspoke estructuras y flujos multimodales de tránsito interno e internacional. Se desarrolla varios modelos de gravedad que incorporan efectos de autocorrelación espacial y de red y realiza pruebas sobre un rico conjunto de datos con flujos agregados y específicos del sector entre 50 provincias mediante cuatro modos de transporte alternativos (carretera, trenes, barcos y aviones) en España.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the complexity of modal cooperation and competition, modeling interprovincial flows within a country and in the presence of logistics infrastructures, warehouses and wholesale activities, as well as hubspoke structures and multimodal internal and international transit flows. It develops various gravity models incorporating spatial and network autocorrelation effects, and conducts tests upon a rich dataset with aggregate and sector-specific flows between 50 provinces by four alternative transport modes (road, trains, ships, and aircraft) in Spain.
