El rol y la neutralidad del intérprete en encuentros con la prensa tras una reunión entre presidentes: Obama y Peña Nieto

Abstract

Las características básicas de un intérprete son: el conocimiento de las lenguas de trabajo, el conocimiento del tema que se tratará y ser profesional. Es esa última característica la menos específica, pues, debido a la poca investigación que ha habido sobre la interpretación consecutiva, no existe una guía que determine cómo deberá trabajar un intérprete según el contexto en el que se encuentre. Este trabajo, analizará el rol de las intérpretes en un encuentro con la prensa de dos políticos tras una reunión bilateral, donde es fundamental que el mensaje que llegue a los periodistas, ya sea a través del original o la interpretación, sea el mismo. El presente estudio, pretende entender mejor los posibles roles que puede adoptar un intérprete consecutivo y las particularidades de su actuación en base al rol escogido. Además, se pretende determinar la importancia que tiene el rol adoptado en este contexto e intentar generalizar una elección como la «ideal» para que otros intérpretes en este mismo contexto puedan seguirla. Como resultado del análisis, se determina que ambas intérpretes optan por un rol, mayoritariamente canal; y que, el parámetro en el que más difieren es en el de la coordinación de la comunicación. Además, se puede ver una clara intención por parte de ambas intérpretes de mantener el mensaje y su intención intactos, siendo mayoritariamente neutrales.

The basic characteristics of an interpreter are: knowledge of the working languages, knowledge of the subject matter and professionalism. Professionalism is the least specific quality, since, due to the little research that has been done on consecutive interpreting, there is no guide that establishes how an interpreter should work depending on the context of the work itself. This paper will analyze the role of interpreters in a meeting of two politicians with the press after a bilateral meeting, where it is essential that the message that reaches the press, whether they understand the original or need the interpretation, is the same. This study aims to understand better the possible roles that a consecutive interpreter can adopt, and the particularities of their performance based on the chosen role. Furthermore, it is intended to determine the importance of the role adopted in this context and to try to generalize a choice as the "ideal" one so that other interpreters in the same context can follow the example. As a result of the analysis, it is determined that both interpreters opt mostly for the ‘channel’ role; and that the parameter in which they differ the most is in the communication coordination. In addition, there is a clear intention on the part of both interpreters to keep the message and its intention intact, being mostly neutral.
