West African Migration to Mediterranean Countries and Agricultural Work

Abstract

Dans ce chapitre, nous dresserons dans un premier temps un bref état des lieux des migrations ouest-africaines vers les pays du sud de l’Europe et du Maghreb à partir des données statistiques nationales et internationales disponibles1 . Ce cadrage statistique porte à la fois sur les tendances globales dans la région ainsi que sur certains des principaux pays de l’espace migratoire afro-méditerranéen pour lesquels le phénomène migratoire est le plus documenté, à savoir le Sénégal (pays d’origine), leMaroc, l’Espagne et l’Italie (pays de destination). Le Maghreb étant souvent considéré avant tout comme un espace de transit pour les Subsahariens en partance pour l’Europe, nous mettrons dans un deuxième temps l’accent sur la diversité réelle de leurs profils, en se concentrant sur le cas du Maroc. Enfin, la troisième partie sera consacrée à l’immigration subsaharienne dans les pays d’Europe du Sud, et s’intéressera à son rôle dans les systèmes espagnol et italien de production agricole.

In this Chapter, we will firstly give a brief overview of West African migration to southern European and Maghreb countries using national and international statistical data available1 . This statistical framework covers both global trends in the region as well as some of the main countries in the Afro-Mediterranean migration area for which the migratory phenomenon is the most documented, namely Senegal (country of origin), Morocco, Spain and Italy (destination countries). Since the Maghreb is often primarily considered as a transit area for sub-Saharan Africans leaving for Europe, we will focus on the real diversity of their profiles and specifically on the case of Morocco. Lastly, the third part will be devoted to sub-Saharan immigration in southern European countries, and will focus on its role in the Spanish and Italian agricultural production systems.
