Abstract

El bienestar de los niños migrantes se ha convertido en el centro de atención de la literatura académica y los formuladores de políticas en los últimos tiempos. Esta revisión sistemática tiene como objetivo analizar las tendencias de publicación sobre el tema y sintetizar la evidencia disponible sobre los antecedentes del bienestar de los niños migrantes internacionales de primera generación. Se realizaron búsquedas sistemáticas de estudios primarios en 18 bases de datos utilizando términos de búsqueda relacionados con la migración, la infancia y el bienestar. Tres rondas de selección y extracción de datos, el acuerdo total de los investigadores y los criterios de inclusión produjeron 39 estudios elegibles. La evaluación crítica de los resultados reveló una fragmentación en la literatura, la evidencia disponible es en su mayoría descriptiva y se centra en los migrantes involuntarios asentados en países occidentales. Se reveló un sesgo en las publicaciones que pasaban por alto a los niños migrantes más jóvenes. La compartimentación de la evidencia dificultó la comprensión de la magnitud de los diferentes efectos de la migración en el bienestar. Se han documentado antecedentes de bienestar como factores que fomentan y dificultan el bienestar. Se han descubierto importantes lagunas en la literatura y antecedentes clave de bienestar para los niños migrantes voluntarios e involuntarios. Estos hallazgos muestran limitaciones en la evidencia disponible que apunta a sugerencias específicas para futuras investigaciones que deberían ayudar a mejorar las intervenciones a nivel social e individual.

Migrant children's well-being has emerged into the spotlight of academic literature and policy-makers in recent times. This systematic review is aimed at analysing the publication trends on the topic and at synthesising the available evidence on the antecedents of well-being of first-generation international migrant children. Systematic searches of primary studies were conducted in 18 databases using search terms related to migration, childhood and well-being. Three rounds of screening and data extraction, researchers' full agreement and the inclusion criteria produced 39 eligible studies. Critical appraisal of results revealed a fragmentation in the literature, the evidence available being mostly descriptive and focused on involuntary migrants settled in Western countries. A bias across publications overlooking younger migrant children was unveiled. The compartmentalisation of the evidence hindered an understanding of the magnitude of the different effects of migration on well-being. Antecedents of well-being have been documented as factors fostering and hindering well-being. Important gaps in literature and key antecedents of well-being have been uncovered for voluntary and involuntary migrant children. These findings show limitations in the available evidence pointing to specific suggestions for future research that should help improve interventions at the social and individual levels.
