Good-for-nothing, Idler or Vagabond? The Spanish Fortunes of Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts by Joseph von Eichendorff

Abstract

Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts [De la vida de un inútil], de Joseph von Eichendorff, pertenece al canon de la literatura clásica alemana y es de lectura obligatoria en las escuelas. La mera mención de la palabra Taugenichts [inútil] es suficiente para identificar la novela. En España, la obra no goza de la condición de clásica porque, por un lado, el autor romántico Eichendorff es más conocido por su poesía lírica, y por otro, porque los títulos tan dispares que llevan las distintas versiones españolas pueden haber contribuido a ocultar la identidad real de la obra. Este estudio de la recepción de Taugenichts en el sistema literario español a través de sus traducciones y retraducciones a lo largo de cien años se centra en los títulos que se le han dado y examina su relación intertextual e intertitular con la obra original y cómo se interrelacionan dentro del corpus de traducciones españolas.

Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts [From the life of a good-for-nothing] by Joseph von Eichendorff belongs to the canon of classic literature in Germany and is compulsory reading in schools. The mere mention of the word Taugenichts [good-for-nothing] is enough to identify the novel. In Spain, the work does not enjoy classic status because, on the one hand, the Romantic author Eichendorff is best known for his lyric poetry, and on the other, because the hugely disparate titles borne by the various Spanish versions may have helped to obscure the actual identity of the work. This study of the reception of Taugenichts in the Spanish literary system through its translations and retranslations over a period of a hundred years focuses on the titles given to it and examines their intertextual and intertitular relationship with the original work and how they interrelate within the corpus of Spanish translations.
