“La humilde profession de no pretender”. Consejos políticos para un tiempo de cambio (1645)

Abstract

El capítulo recoge la contextualización del sermón pronunciado por el jesuita Agustín de Castro en 1645 dirigido a los miembros de la Congregación de la Compañía de Jesús celebrada en Toledo para nombrar a los electores que debían trasladarse a Roma para proceder a la elección del nuevo prepósito general tras la muerte de Muzio Vitelleschi. La importancia del sermón pronunciado, del que se extraen los consejos políticos para encauzar los cambios que se estaban produciendo, se relaciona con el prestigio de su autor como predicador, así como que fue uno de los docentes del Colegio imperial más significados por su actividad cortesana. En este sentido, tanto su protectora, la reina Isabel de Borbón, como el principal objeto de sus críticas, el Conde Duque de Olivares, habían desaparecido de la escena política al haber fallecido la primera en octubre de1644 y haber caído en desgracia el segundo el año anterior.

The chapter includes the contextualization of the sermon delivered by the Jesuit Agustín de Castro in 1645 addressed to the members of the Congregation of the Society of Jesus held in Toledo to name the electors who had to travel to Rome to proceed with the election of the new superior general after the death of Muzio Vitelleschi. The importance of the sermon delivered, from which the political advice to channel the changes that were taking place is extracted, is related to the prestige of its author as a preacher, as well as the fact that he was one of the teachers of the imperial College most significant for his courtly activity. Both, his protector, Queen Isabel de Borbón, and the main object of his criticism, the Count-Duke of Olivares, had disappeared from the political scene as the former died in October 1644 and the latter fell into disgrace on last year.
