Age, a key factor in the performance of doubles badminton players: Analysis of the evolution of age from 1994 to 2020.

Abstract

El objetivo principal de esta investigación fue establecer la evolución de las edades de los jugadores de bádminton en las modalidades de dobles masculino, femenino y mixto en el top-100 del Ranking Mundial (WR) desde 1994 hasta 2020. Los datos se obtuvieron del Badminton World Sitio web de la federación (7200 entradas: 3304 jugadores) de 1994 a 2020. Se analizó la posición más alta y la edad media de los 100 mejores jugadores de bádminton WR para cada modalidad. En las modalidades de dobles masculinos (MD) y dobles mixtos (XD) se observó un aumento progresivo de la edad media de 1994 a 2020 (DM: 1994 = 23,91 ± 3,93 años vs. 2020 = 25,55 ± 4,40 años; p < 0,001 y XD : 1994 = 24,06 ± 3,99 años vs 2020 = 25,34 ± 4,77 años, p = 0,004). En cambio, la modalidad de dobles femeninos no presentó ningún cambio en la edad media de 1994 a 2020 (~24 años; p = 0,317). Además, las jugadoras de dobles femeninos alcanzaron su ranking más alto a una edad más temprana (~23 años) que los jugadores de dobles masculinos y mixtos (~25 años). En conclusión, como suele ocurrir en otros deportes, las jugadoras de dobles de bádminton de élite son más jóvenes y alcanzan su máximo rendimiento a una edad más temprana que sus homólogos masculinos. Estos datos podrían ayudar a entrenadores, formadores y seleccionadores a planificar la carrera deportiva de sus jugadores de élite

The main objective of this research was to establish the evolution of badminton players’ ages in the modalities of men’s, women’s and mixed doubles in the top-100 of the World Ranking (WR) from 1994 to 2020. Data were obtained from the Badminton World Federation website (7200 entries: 3304 players) from 1994 to 2020. The highest-ranking position and the mean age of the top-100 WR badminton players were analyzed for each modality. In the men’s doubles (MD) and mixed doubles (XD) modalities, a progressive increase of mean age was observed from 1994 to 2020 (MD: 1994 = 23.91 ± 3.93 years vs. 2020 = 25.55 ± 4.40 years; p < 0.001 and XD: 1994 = 24.06 ± 3.99 years vs. 2020 = 25.34 ± 4.77 years; p = 0.004). In contrast, the women’s doubles modality did not present any change in mean age from 1994 to 2020 (~24 years; p = 0.317). In addition, women’s doubles players reached their highest ranking at an earlier age (~23 years) than men’s and mixed doubles players (~25 years). In conclusion, as often happens in other sports, elite women badminton doubles players are younger and reach their peak performance at a younger age than their male counterparts. These data could help coaches, trainers and selectors to plan the sports career of their elite players
