La influencia del COVID-19 en la interpretación remota

Abstract

El contexto provocado por la pandemia de Covid-19 ha generado una serie de transformaciones en el ámbito de la interpretación, especialmente en lo que respecta a la transición hacia modalidades remotas. Antes de la aparición de la crisis sanitaria, la interpretación remota, aunque presente, carecía de una difusión significativa y enfrentaba obstáculos, como la fatiga cognitiva y las dificultades técnicas. Sin embargo, la crisis global ha acelerado significativamente la aceptación y el uso de esta modalidad, planteando una serie de oportunidades y retos para los intérpretes. En respuesta a esta situación, instituciones como la AIIC, establecieron directrices con el objetivo de preservar la calidad y la confidencialidad de la interpretación. Estas directrices incluían recomendaciones sobre el entorno técnico y el bienestar del intérprete, para asegurarse de que la calidad del servicio no se veía comprometida por las circunstancias. En este proyecto, se pretende llevar a cabo una encuesta dirigida a intérpretes profesionales para analizar de qué manera el Covid-19 ha influido en la práctica de la interpretación remota. Asimismo, se pretende proporcionar un panorama comprensivo sobre cómo la pandemia ha remodelado el formato de la interpretación, así como la eficacia y relevancia de la interpretación remota en el contexto actual.

The context caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has generated a series of transformations in the field of interpretation, especially regarding the transition to remote modalities. Before the onset of the health crisis, remote interpretation, although present, lacked significant dissemination and faced numerous obstacles, such as cognitive fatigue and technical difficulties. However, the global crisis has significantly accelerated the acceptance and use of this modality, presenting a series of opportunities and challenges for interpreters. In response to this situation, institutions like AIIC (International Association of Conference Interpreters) established guidelines aimed at preserving the quality and confidentiality of interpretation. These guidelines included detailed recommendations on the technical environment, such as high-quality audio and video equipment, and interpreter well-being, emphasizing proper breaks and mental health support, to ensure that the quality of service was not compromised by the circumstances. This project aims to conduct an extensive survey directed at professional interpreters to analyze in depth how Covid-19 has influenced the practice of remote interpretation. It will explore various aspects, including changes in demand for remote interpretation, shifts in interpreter working conditions, and the impact on interpreter-client interactions. Additionally, it seeks to provide a comprehensive overview of how the pandemic has reshaped the format and methods of interpretation, highlighting both positive advancements and ongoing challenges. The survey results will contribute valuable insights into the effectiveness and relevance of remote interpretation in the current global context, guiding future practices and policies in the field.
