La incorporación de Suecia y Finlandia a la OTAN: el fin de la neutralidad

Abstract

Si bien es cierto que desde hace algunos años el debate sobre la pertenencia de Suecia y Finlandia a la OTAN estaba presente, la amenaza de Rusia y la agresión a Ucrania ha disparado los tiempos. Cuando acabe el verano, la OTAN no solo tendrá dos nuevos miembros, sino que además habrá incorporado a dos Estados que pertenecían al grupo de los neutrales. Este hecho puede suponer un precedente y provocar que otros Estados neutrales como Irlanda, Austria o Moldavia puedan seguir los pasos de los países escandinavos. Por ello, con la incorporación de Suecia y Finlandia a la OTAN el concepto de neutralidad, al menos en Europa, podría tener los días contados.

While it is true that the debate over Sweden and Finland's membership in NATO has been ongoing for several years, the threat from Russia and the aggression against Ukraine has accelerated the timeline. When summer ends, NATO will not only have two new members, but it will also have welcomed two states that were formerly part of the group of neutrals. This development could set a precedent and lead other neutral states like Ireland, Austria, or Moldova to follow in the footsteps of the Scandinavian countries. Therefore, with the inclusion of Sweden and Finland in NATO, the concept of neutrality, at least in Europe, may be numbered.
