dc.description.abstract | Introduction: Groin injuries are common among tennis players, but the specific risk factors for these injuries following a match have not been well-defined. This study aimed to investigate the effects of tennis match-play on isometric hip adductor (ADD) and abductor (ABD) strength, as well as passive hip range of motion (ROM). Methods: Twenty-six male tennis players, with an average age of 20.30 years, participated in the study. They underwent strength and flexibility assessments before and after a simulated tennis match. Measurements included passive hip ROM for both dominant and non-dominant hips, isometric ADD and ABD strength, and the ADD/ABD strength ratio. The study also used a global positioning system (GPS) and a session rating of perceived exertion (RPE) to assess the physical demands and internal match load. Results: After the match, there was a significant decrease in isometric dominant ADD strength (17.8%) and the ADD/ABD strength ratio (11.6%). No significant differences were observed between limbs for ADD strength, ABD strength, or passive hip ROM. RPE scores increased significantly post-match, indicating the increased perceived exertion. Moreover, a correlation was found between lower volume of weekly tennis practice and a reduction in dominant limb ADD strength post-match. Conclusion: The study suggests that assessing ADD strength and the ADD/ABD strength ratio in the dominant limb can be a valuable post-match tool for identifying players who may need rest and additional recovery strategies before their next competition. Groin injuries in tennis players may be linked to decreases in ADD strength, especially in those with lower weekly training volumes. Understanding these factors can help develop injury prevention strategies and optimize player performance. | en-GB |
