El Maestro Eckhart en la mística española del s. XVI: Santa Teresa de Jesús y San Juan de la Cruz

Abstract

En 1966, Jean Orcibal advirtió la influencia directa del Maestro Eckhart en San Juan de la Cruz, y podemos preguntarnos si sucedió lo mismo con Santa Teresa de Jesús. De ser así, tendrían que haber llegado a España los escritos del Dominico alemán. A través de estas líneas mostraremos, en primer lugar, las vías de transmisión de los textos eckhartianos y cómo estuvieron a disposición de los místicos españoles en el siglo XVI: se hallaban presentes en las ediciones latinas de Tauler y de Ruysbroeck, y en la traducción castellana de las Instituciones. En un segundo momento abordaremos la influencia de Eckhart en San Juan de la Cruz (1542-1591) y en Santa Teresa de Jesús (1515-1582), teniendo en cuenta el estado de la investigación. Y señalaremos los grandes temas en los que aparece una ‘confluencia’ de perspectivas y seguramente también una ‘influencia’ del Maestro Eckhart y su escuela en estos grandes escritores y místicos carmelitas del siglo XVI.

In 1966, Jean Orcibal noted the direct influence of Meister Eckhart on Saint John of the Cross, and we may wonder whether the same was true of Saint Teresa of Jesus. If so, the writings of the German Dominican should also have reached Spain. In the following lines, we will first show how Eckhart's texts were transmitted and how they were available to Spanish mystics in the 16th century: they were present in the Latin editions of Tauler and Ruysbroeck, as well as in the Spanish translation of the Institutions. In the second section, we will deal with Eckhart's influence on Saint John of the Cross (1542-1591) and Saint Teresa of Jesus (1515-1582), taking into account the state of research. Additionally, we will point out the major themes in which there appears to be a ‘confluence’ of perspectives, as well as a definite ‘influence’ by Meister Eckhart and his school on these great Carmelite writers and mystics of the 16th century.
