Los límites epistemológicos de la investigación científica en el problema mente-cerebro : una lectura desde Mariano Artigas

Abstract

Este trabajo reflexiona acerca del problema mente-cerebro desde una perspectiva epistemológica. Basándose en la convicción de que el quid de la cuestión se encuentra tanto en los supuestos filosóficos de las disciplinas que lo estudian como en el reconocimiento explícito de los mismos. Se analizará especialmente el pensamiento del filósofo, físico y teólogo Mariano Artigas, quien estudió en profundidad el diálogo entre ciencia y filosofía, disciplinas protagonistas de este problema fronterizo. A partir del diálogo con Artigas y otros autores, como Thomas Kuhn, Karl Popper, Michael Polanyi, Aristóteles y Tomás de Aquino, el trabajo analiza los límites de la pretendida neutralidad absoluta de la ciencia y la imposibilidad de una observación completamente libre de teoría. Asimismo, se reflexiona sobre la diferencia entre información, conocimiento y sabiduría, defendiendo la necesidad de recuperar una comprensión sapiencial del saber que permita integrar las distintas áreas del conocimiento humano dentro de una visión más amplia, coherente y ordenada de la realidad. La tesis central sostiene que el verdadero desafío del problema mente-cerebro no consiste únicamente en obtener más datos empíricos, sino también en explicitar y examinar críticamente los supuestos epistemológicos desde los cuales dichos datos son interpretados. En este sentido, el trabajo busca poner en evidencia los argumentos que cuestionan la pretensión de una ausencia total de interpretación en las ciencias, con el fin de favorecer un diálogo más honesto, profundo y verdaderamente fructífero acerca del problema mente-cerebro.

This paper reflects on the mind-brain problem from an epistemological and philosophical perspective, based on the conviction that the crux of the matter lies both in the philosophical assumptions of the disciplines that study it and in their explicit acknowledgment. It will particularly analyze the thought of the philosopher, physicist, and theologian Mariano Artigas, who extensively studied the dialogue between science and philosophy, disciplines central to this boundary problem. Drawing on authors such as Mariano Artigas, Thomas Kuhn, Karl Popper, Michael Polanyi, Aristotle, and Thomas Aquinas, the paper analyzes the limits of the supposed absolute neutrality of science and the impossibility of observation completely free of theory. It also reflects on the difference between information, knowledge, and wisdom, arguing for the need to recover a sapiential understanding of knowledge that allows for the integration of the different areas of human knowledge within a broader, more coherent, and ordered vision of reality. The central thesis argues that the true challenge of the mind-brain problem lies not only in obtaining more empirical data, but also in making explicit and critically examining the epistemological assumptions from which this data is interpreted. In this sense, the work seeks to highlight the arguments that challenge the claim of a total absence of interpretation in the sciences, in order to foster a more honest, profound, and truly fruitful dialogue about the mind-brain problem.
