Is the corporate financial strategy in the oil and gas sector affected by ESG dimensions?

Abstract

El sector del petróleo y el gas está sometido a una creciente presión debido a su impacto sobre la sostenibilidad ambiental. Este estudio desarrolla un índice ESG que integra las dimensiones ambiental, social y de gobernanza para analizar su influencia sobre la estrategia financiera corporativa. Mediante modelos de ecuaciones estructurales PLS-SEM aplicados a una muestra de 219 empresas internacionales del sector, se evalúa el efecto del índice ESG sobre el valor de mercado, el rendimiento financiero y el riesgo financiero. Los resultados muestran que las dimensiones ambiental y de gobernanza constituyen los principales componentes del índice ESG y ejercen un efecto positivo sobre el rendimiento financiero y el valor de mercado, al tiempo que reducen el riesgo financiero. El trabajo aporta evidencia sobre la importancia estratégica de las políticas ESG en la industria energética.The oil and gas sector is under pressure because of its impact on sustainability. Company's stakeholders are aware of the ethical behavior of those firms related to hazardous activities. Literature has analyzed the relationship between corporate social responsibility and different measures of efficiency without a conclusive result. This research establishes an ESG index that allows a comprehensive measure of corporate social responsibility and its effects on corporate financial strategy. The study analyzes how the ESG index influences the value of oil and gas companies as well as their financial performance and financial risk. Results show that the environmental and governance dimensions are the backbone of the ESG index that positively impact on all three.
