Georg Büchner's Fiction in Spain: The Translations of Lenz

Abstract

Con este capítulo se pretende dar una visión introductoria a las traducciones al español de Lenz, obra en la que Georg Büchner ofrece una descripción extremadamente moderna del descenso a la locura experimentado por un poeta del siglo XVIII. Comenzamos con una visión breve sobre su vida y obra para, a continuación, ocuparnos del único texto en prosa que Büchner creó. Se ofrecen algunos datos sobre la recepción de la obra, tanto en Alemania como en España, sin embargo, el interés especial se dirige hacia las traducciones y retraducciones ofrecidas al lector español. Las seis traducciones encontradas durante el rastreo realizado en diferentes bases de datos y catálogos biográficos tienen, cada una, su trasfondo específico y cada una de ellas enfoca aspectos particulares. Es interesante observar cómo las elecciones de los traductores influyen en sus versiones del texto y, de esta forma, tienen un impacto en la recepción de la obra del autor en España.

This chapter aims to provide an introduction to the Spanish translations of Lenz, Georg Büchner s most modern description of an 18th-century poet s descent into madness. I begin with a short overview of his life and work and then focus on the only prose text Büchner created. Some details are given about the work s reception both in Germany and in Spain, but special interest is drawn to the translations and retranslations offered to the Spanish reader. The six translations I found during my inventory made from different databases and biographical catalogues all have their specific backgrounds and focus on particular aspects. It is interesting to see how the translators choices affect their versions of the text and thus have an impact on the reception of the author s work in Spain.
