Abstract
This paper aims to illustrate the need to carry out a transformation of the current educational model through an education model based on the transmission of competences. In recent decades, global awareness regarding the need to create a more sustainable world has grown considerably. However, it is necessary for it to continue growing in order to prevent further destruction of the planet, as until know it has been severely damages as a result of production and consumption patterns used. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) acquires a leading role in the defence of a more sustainable world through the education of today's students so that they become change agents in the future. ESD, understood as the link between today's students and the 2 professionals of tomorrow, proposes that all the universities of the world implement in their institutions an education system based on the transmission of competences and an education "for" and not " about " sustainable development empowering students so they will be able to cope with problems in their future. Additionally, a case study is carried out at the Universidad Pontificia de Comillas, a university that belongs to the Compañía de Jesús and presents a series of similarities in its educational project that can be related to the proposals of the ESD model.
