Burbujas económicas y el mercado del arte : posibles relaciones

Abstract

En el presente trabajo se analizan el concepto de burbuja económica o especulativa y se hace un breve estudio del funcionamiento del mercado del arte, todo ello con miras determinar la existencia o inexistencia de una burbuja económica en el mercado del arte. En un primer bloque se estudia el concepto de burbuja económica, con sus correspondientes fases, las diferentes aproximaciones de la doctrina al concepto, así como ejemplos significativos de las mismas en el pasado. En el segundo apartado se analizan los demandantes y oferentes en el mercado del arte, así como la distribución geográfica global de los primeros. En el tercer apartado se realiza un estudio matemático de los precios medios en el mercado del arte, a fin de determinar, junto con lo analizado en los apartados anteriores, la existencia de una burbuja especulativa en el mismo. La conclusión final es negativa. La metodología aplicada en las dos primeras partes del proyecto ha consistido básicamente en la recopilación de toda la información disponible hasta el día de hoy sobre la materia. El primer bloque muestra un enfoque mucho más teórico que el segundo, cuya aproximación es más "humana", buscando desentrañar las motivaciones de los diferentes agentes del mercado desde un punto de vista más conductual que meramente económico. Finalmente, la tercera parte del proyecto ha consistido en, a partir de datos y de lo expuesto en las dos primeras partes del trabajo, elaborar una conclusión propia y creativa, pero en todo caso justificada.

In this paper we analize the concept of economic or speculative bubble and we study the functioning of the global art market, with a view to determine whether there is or not an economic bubble in the global art market. The first block is dedicated to the study of the concept of economic bubble, with its different stages, the theories about it and examples of bubbles in the past. In the second block, we study the main bidders and suppliers od the global art market, as well as the geographical distribution of the first of them. Finally, in the third part of the paper, after a mathematical study of the situation, and together with the information presented previously, we determine that there is no bubble in the current global art market. The methodology applied in the two first parts of the project has consisted basically on exploring the information available until today about the matter. The first block shows a much more theoretical approach than the second one, in which we have tried to explore the human component of the different market agents, rather than just studying their behavior from an economic point of view. Finally, the third part of the project consists mainly of analyzing data and extracting conclusions out of the two first blocks of the paper, in order to elaborate a creative (as well as justified) conclusion.
