El comercio de atletas de tiburón : los principales problemas para la conservación de tiburones

Abstract

En los últimos años, la población de tiburones ha descendido bruscamente, tanto que en la actualidad no se puede estimar el grado de vulnerabilidad de estos animales. La principal razón por la que se ha originado esta situación es su caza masiva motivada por la industria multimillonaria de las aletas de tiburón. Consumidas principalmente en las regiones asiáticas pero comercializadas a escala global, las aletas de tiburón suponen una gran amenaza para los propios tiburones y la sostenibilidad medioambiental. Este trabajo analiza las principales tendencias de este mercado. En primer lugar, aproxima información sobre el rol de los tiburones en el ecosistema. En segundo lugar, estudia la historia del mercado de las aletas de tiburón hasta la actualidad. Posteriormente, identifica los principales problemas que origina la sobrepesca de tiburón y la actuación a nivel internacional sobre su protección. Finalmente, se realiza una investigación empírica acerca de los conocimientos y las actitudes de los seres humanos sobre el consumo y comercio de los tiburones.

In recent years, the shark population has dramatically decreased, so much that currently the vulnerability degree of these animals cannot be estimated. The main reason that has led to this situation is the massive scale hunting motivated by the multimillionaire shark fin industry. Mainly consumed in Asiatic regions but commercialized on a global scale, the shark fin supposes a big menace for the shark itself and the sustainability of the environment. This paper analyzes the main tendencies of this market. First, it approximates information about the role of sharks in the ecosystem. Second, it studies the history of the shark fin market until today. Then, it identifies the main problems that originate due to the overfishing of the shark and the international performance of its protection. Finally, an empirical research is conducted on the knowledge and attitude of human beings about the consumption and trade of sharks.
