Conocimiento de la sociedad acerca de los Cuidados Paliativos

Abstract

Introducción: los cuidados paliativos comenzaron a fínales de los años sesenta, sin embargo, hoy en día son todavía desconocidos para la sociedad. Muchos pacientes subsidiarios de recibirlos no lo hacen por el desconocimiento o por la desinformación que hay entorno a los cuidados paliativos. Esto se debe, en gran parte, al miedo que tiene la sociedad a la muerte hoy en día. Es un tema tabú y se intenta alejar lo máximo posible de nuestras vidas sin darnos cuenta que, sin muerte, no hay vida. Objetivo: determinar el conocimiento de la sociedad acerca de los cuidados paliativos. Ver si se perviven como útiles o no. Material y métodos: se realizó un estudio descriptivo donde los sujetos estudiados eran mayores de edad, de los cuales quedaban excluidos del estudio aquellos que fueran personal sanitario o estudiantes sanitarios. Los datos se recogieron con un cuestionario de realización propia y se analizaron con el programa SPSS 19®. Resultados: hubo una muestra total de 290 participantes. Sí sabían lo que son los CP 257 (88,6%) y no lo sabían 33 (11,4%). 261 (90%) saben a quién van dirigidos. En cuanto a los lugares asistenciales, 236 (81,4%) conocen las UHCP y 169 (58,3%) conocen las UCPD. De los encuestados, 283 (97,6%) creen que los cuidados paliativos son útiles y 280 (96,6%) los utilizaría. La palabra alivio fue la más citada por los participantes con un porcentaje del 61%. El 18% de los encuestados opina que los cuidados paliativos acortan la vida de los pacientes. Además, el 36,3% opina que el llevar a cabo cuidados paliativos reduce la carga de trabajo del personal sanitario. Conclusiones: parece que una gran parte de la sociedad conoce los cuidados paliativos y tiene una visión positiva de ellos, sin embargo, todavía hay muchos aspectos que se tienen que trabajar. Sería recomendable llevar a cabo un estudio en profundidad sobre este tema.

Introduction: Palliative care began in the 1960s, however, today they are still unknown to society. Many subsidiary patients to receive them do not have the possibility because of the ignorance or disinformation that there is between palliative care. This is because, nowadays, the society is afraid of the death. It is a taboo subject and we try to distance as much as possible from our lives without realizing that without death there is no life. Aim: to determine the society's knowledge about palliative care. To see if they believe whether they are useful or not. Material and methods: a descriptive study was carried out in which the subjects studied were adults, of which those who were health professionals or health students were excluded from the study. The data were collected with a self-completion questionnaire and they were analyzed with SPSS 19® program. Results: there were 290 participants, 257 (88.6%) had knowledge about palliative care and did not have knowledge 33 (11.4%). 261 (90%) know who needs them and in terms of care places, 236 (81.4%) know the UHCP and 169 (58.3%) know the UCPD. Of the respondents, 283 (97.6%) believe that palliative care is useful and 280 (96.6%) would use it. The word relief was the most cited by the participants with a percentage of 61%. 18% of the respondents believe that palliative care shortens the patient’s life. In addition, 36.3% believe that carrying out palliative care reduces the work of health professionals. Conclusions: it seems that society has knowlege about palliative care and it has a positive view of them, although there are still some aspects that are unknown. It would be advisable to carry out an in-depth study about this topic.
