Estudios Multiculturales
Abstract
There is a widespread belief that China is buying Africa and Latin America. This study analyzes investment flows from China to these two continents in recent years and compares the strategy followed in both. The origin of the funds, the amounts invested, as well as the industries to which the foreign direct investments are directed to show more concisely what China intends to obtain from them. Host countries receive numerous advantages and opportunities due to the Chinese presence, not only through their investments but also through other financial instruments. Although investments cannot be separated from other economic indicators, they do offer a concise idea of part of the relevance that each region has for China. Chinese investments in Latin America are channeled towards more developed sectors and in larger amounts than investments in Africa, which are based on industries such as construction and mining. This study presents a more accurate picture of China's real objectives in both regions and shows the relative importance of the two continents for the Asian giant in terms of its investments.
