Abstract

John Fitzgerald Kennedy, trigésimo quinto presidente de Estados Unidos, ha dejado huella en la Casa Blanca y en la historia estadounidense, no solo por sus logros políticos en una época convulsa marcada por la Guerra Fría y los enfrentamientos entre el bloque capitalista y comunista, sino también por su don de palabra. El presente trabajo analiza las dificultades que entraña la retórica del Presidente para un intérprete de simultánea EN>ES en el discurso pronunciado el 10 de junio de 1963 en la American University: A Strategy of Peace y expone diferentes estrategias que el intérprete utilizará en caso de plantearse dichas dificultades. Todo ello por medio de dos análisis: un análisis más amplio y menos detallado y un análisis más práctico centrado en dos fragmentos del discurso.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, has left his mark on the White House and on American history, not only because of his political achievements in a turbulent period marked by the Cold War and the confrontations between the capitalist and communist bloc, but also because of his gift of speech. This paper analyses the difficulties that the President's rhetoric entails for an English>Spanish simultaneous interpreter in the speech he pronounced on 10 June 1963 at the American University: A Strategy of Peace, and also sets out different strategies that the interpreter will use if such difficulties arise. This is done by means of two analyses: a broader and less detailed analysis, and a more practical analysis focused on two fragments of the speech.
