American Presidential Rhetoric: comparative discourse analysis of Donald Trump’s and Joe Biden’s inaugural addresses

Abstract

En este trabajo titulado “American Presidential Rhetoric: Comparative Discourse Analysis of Donald Trump’s and Joe Biden’s Inaugural Addresses” se realiza un análisis comparativo de los discursos inaugurales en la ceremonia de toma de posesión de la presidencia de Estados Unidos de los 45º y 46º presidentes, Donald Trump y Joe Biden. En este análisis comparativo en primer lugar se procede a realizar una contextualización de la situación política actual en Estados Unidos y el panorama nacional en general, para continuar con una breve introducción de cada presidente correspondiente. Habiendo presentado a los presidentes, se realiza una presentación de las teorías, autores y artículos en los que se basará el consecuente análisis de cada discurso inaugural. Los discursos serán analizados en base a las condiciones sociales e históricas en el momento de la toma de posesión, la estructura y el tema principal y temas secundarios, la intención del discurso, los elementos lingüísticos y las funciones del lenguaje según las teorías y esquemas de Jakobson, el estilo del discurso, incluyendo recursos literarios como metáforas, paralelismos o anáforas con el fin de conseguir embellecer el discurso o persuadir estratégicamente mediante el uso de la retórica. Finalmente se realizará un análisis léxico de las palabras más destacadas o repetidas a lo largo del discurso y tras la visualización del discurso en vivo, un análisis breve del lenguaje no verbal. Tras haber analizado los discursos por separado se lleva a cabo una comparativa de los discursos en base a las hipótesis formuladas previamente para cada presidente.

In this bachelor’s thesis titled “American Presidential Rhetoric: Comparative Discourse Analysis of Donald Trump’s and Joe Biden’s Inaugural Addresses” a thorough discourse analysis takes place of the inaugural address speeches at the time of the inaugural ceremony of both 45th and 46th US Presidents, Donald Trump and Joe Biden. In this comparative discourse analysis, a contextualization will take place regarding the political situation in the US and the national panorama in general, to continue with a brief introduction of both Presidents. Having presented both Presidents, the theoretical framework is presented in terms of the authors, articles, and theories in which the analysis of the speeches will be based on. The discourse analysis will be done based on the macroconditions surrounding the speech at the time of its delivery, their structure, and the main and secondary topics present in it, as well as the intent of the discourse, the communication elements and language functions from Jakobson’s theory, the style of the discourse including the stylistic resources such as metaphors, anaphora, or parallelisms, among others. These rhetorical resources are analyzed taking into consideration the strategic persuasive objectives of the speakers and the embellishment of the discourse. Finally, a lexical choice analysis will be carried out to identify the most salient and relevant words use and analyze the reasoning behind the choice of different words and how they represent the ideological direction of discourse. The final step is a visualization of the live delivery of the speech to briefly analyze the non-verbal communication of each of the speakers. Having finished the separate analysis of each discourse, a comparative will be done in order to contrast the most relevant aspects of each speech based on the hypothesis formulated for each President.
