Abstract
This paper studies the relationship between the labor market and the number of people serving sentences in Spain through four aspects related to the job market. Firstly, we study the relationship, specifically between the number of convicted prisoners and the employment rate, and secondly, between the convicted population and wages. Later, we will look at the relationship between the number of work permits granted to foreigners and the foreign convicted population, comparing the results of these findings with those derived from the study of the relationship between permits granted and the total convicted population. Finally, we will analyze whether we can use the at-risk-of-poverty rate statistic to explain the number of convicts. In each of these comparisons, we will employ a variety of econometric models to observe the evolution of our results, studying the effect that the use of each of these techniques has on our data. The results we have obtained through this methodology, although not very conclusive, have helped us to perceive the importance that certain variables may have on crime.
