FRAMING MIGRATION: AN ANALYSIS OF SELECTED UK NEWSPAPER ARTICLES - A case study on the use of media framing in the coverage of the Illegal Migration Act
The present Bachelor Thesis analyses how four British news media outlets –The Daily Mirror, The Daily Mail, The Daily Telegraph, and the Guardian– have framed irregular migration in the context of the Illegal Migration Bill. The analysis, which includes one article per media outlet, uses the frame typology proposed by Semetko and Valkenburg, consisting of the economic consequences, attribution of responsibility, morality, conflict, and human interest frames. These framing strategies are compared across two main variables: type of news media employed –broadsheet vs tabloid– and political ideology –conservative vs progressive– of said news media. The results show that the conflict, attribution of responsibility, and morality frames stand out among the selected articles. Although the frequency of use of these frames does not vary substantially depending on the type or ideology of the media outlet, there are differences in the way in which they are employed to express agreement or disagreement with the law.
