The patrimonialization processes of artisanal salinas in Europe, a model for similar landscapes and heritage forms?

Abstract

Esta contribución presenta los procesos de patrimonialización que tienen lugar en las salinas artesanales en Europa y analiza cómo éstas pueden contribuir a la conservación del patrimonio, del paisaje y al desarrollo local. En el último siglo, las salinas artesanales en Europa han sufrido un declive progresivo, como consecuencia de profundos cambios socioeconómicos, lo que ha limitado su capacidad de competir en el mercado convencional de la sal. En otros casos, los agentes sociales han logrado desencadenar, impulsar e incluso consolidar un proceso de patrimonialización. Para lograr esto, se han diseñado y ofrecido productos y servicios asociados a la producción de sal de alta calidad, Dichos productos y servicios han contribuido a mantener el uso multifuncional del espacio con una actividad socioeconómica diversificada, con suficiente rentabilidad, respetando al mismo tiempo los valores naturales del lugar.Así, estos espacios han evolucionado desde el negocio de la sal hasta el negocio del patrimonio relacionado con la sal. Los resultados de este trabajo se han basado en el estudio de doce salinas artesanales: las nueve salinas de interior de España que están protegidas como BIC (Bien de Interés Cultural y tres espacios patrimonializados en Europa.

This contribution presents the processes of patrimonialization that take place in artisanal salinas in Europe and analyses how these can contribute to the preservation of heritage, landscape and local development. In the last century, artisanal salt making sites in Europe have suffered a progressive decline, which has limited their ability to compete in the mainstream salt market. In some cases, however, local stakeholders have been able to spark, push forward and even consolidate a patrimonialization process. To achieve this, many products and services associated with the production of high quality salt. These have contributed to maintain a multifunctional use of the site with a diversified socioeconomic activity with enough profitability, while respecting the natural values of the sites. In this process, the sites have therefore moved from a situation of managerial indifference or even abandonment, to a collective, highly motivated citizen-led effort to recover the heritage and natural values of the sites. In the end, these sites have thus progressed from the salt business to the business of salt-related heritage. The results of this work have been based on the study of twelve artisanal salinas, namely the nine inland sites in Spain that are protected as BIC (good of cultural interest) and three successfully recovered sites elsewhere in Europe
