This project investigates the Fused Granular Fabrication (FGF) technology, an alternative to Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) that uses polymer pellets as feedstock instead of conventional filament. The work is structured into two main parts. In the first part, a desktop FDM 3D printer was adapted to enable pellet-based printing. This required modifications to both the mechanical structure of the printer and its firmware, allowing the integration of a pellet extruder and ensuring the correct operation of the system. In the second part, an experimental study was carried out using a commercial large-format 3D printer, the PioCreat G5 Ultra Pellet 3D Printer, with the aim of preliminarily determining the most suitable printing parameters for two of the most widely used thermoplastic materials in additive manufacturing: PLA and ABS. Furthermore, based on the results obtained from both experimental stages, a comparison between FGF and FDM technologies was performed. FDM was selected as the reference technology because both processes share the same extrusion-based manufacturing principle, with the main difference being the type of raw material used. The results show that FGF is not intended to replace FDM technology, but rather to complement it in applications where productivity, manufacturing cost reduction, and the use of recycled materials are key factors. Additionally, FGF presents significant potential as a more sustainable technology, as it enables the reuse of existing FDM printer structures and promotes the incorporation of recycled materials into additive manufacturing processes.en-GB
